11:30-17:26 sums up quite well what I’ve been feeling about the Sheikh Jarrah decision. If Palestinians shouldn’t be allowed Right of Return, I don’t see how Israel can reopen the question on ‘48 to return to lands east of the green line. It’s a concession that we need for peace. https://twitter.com/newzionists/status/1391551770841714688
It feels devastating for that to be true given the ethnic cleansing by Jordan in this area and I empathize with the desire to Judaize these areas, but it’s a necessity to end relitigation of this war if we want to move forward toward peace.
My instinct is to defend Israel, but I just see this decision as wrong and believe Israel deserves some criticism here. The discourse has been reductionist and heavy. This thread presents a good perspective IMO: https://twitter.com/yeoldeavishai/status/1390943931039424514
That being said, the violence that has ensued in Jeru. as a result is devastating, but coopting the situation for a one sided narrative that does not intend to accommodate for Israel is wrong and disingenuous to say the least.
Implying that US tax dollars are paying for the violence in East Jeru. is dangerous and ignorant of the function of US aid to Israel, much of which supports cooperative missile defense systems that protect Israelis from Hamas rockets. Conditioning aid is a bad decision and, https://twitter.com/rashidatlaib/status/1391086428852006915
using this situation to make that claim takes the criticism that Israel rightly deserves quite too far. The State Dept. oversees much of the Israeli purchases and use of American foreign military assistance.
And don’t get me wrong, the extremists who are using Sheikh Jarrah to call for bombing Tel Aviv or assaults and terrorism against Israelis are to blame as well. And INN’s tweet (which has since been deleted) stroking of this discourse and honoring violence is GROSS.
Israel should and will take any call for a third intifada very seriously — but at the end of the day it will have devastating effects on Israelis, and will not end the conflict. It will only further push off the peace process and be a loss for Palestinians in any Israeli response
