I wish Steven universe did more with the whole gems dont have gender thing. I get that it helped them get away with the gay stuff probably but. Even that time a nonbinary person voiced a gem they didnt really. Do anything interesting with the gems concept of gender.
Probably didnt help peoples perception of nonbinary as "girl lite" that every gem seen on screen just so happens to identify as female :v
Literally even the only gem not voiced by a woman uses she/her despite having a nonbinary actor that uses they/them
I'm sure there was studio meddling there always is with these topics this isnt like a personal attack on anyone. But the lack of gender shouldve be brought up at least as much as the gems having hard light bodies.
Correct me if I'm wrong but does the lack of gender ever get brought up in the show? Because I feel like it's entirely out of universe with like. Staff saying that.
Before this thread gets too long I will mention i do appreciate that there is a they them character and that stevonnie uses they them. I'm not ignoring that. I just think it's weird that they made the gems "genderless" but then pretty much just made them all women.
