Every single day, I find gigs online that are either truly not worth the effort I would have to put into them/on which I would lose money once I invested in the tech + props. 1/ https://twitter.com/gilmored85/status/1391515640712867845
I am looking at you, “Classical Education” homeschooling co-opt grift, which wants Latin + Greek (not clear what sort, unspecified) instructors + but only if they’re sufficiently committed to their pet pedagogy + pass their random cultural litmus tests. 2/
But, of course, they’re not really a school, so you’re not really an employee. You’re an independent, self-starting education entrepreneur who (preferably) has a graduate degree, teaches exactly what they want how they want when they want for a salary they set. 3/
At the same time, you neither expect nor need full-time pay or medical benefits because of course you don’t! (There’s a huge disclaimer on their site about this but not a word about how they handle pay). 4/
There is no reason for me to apply to those gigs. None. All the risks of working for a school (being litmus tested/surveilled while teaching) and none of the benefits (a predictable schedule, reasonable pay, benefits). They’re mining people for value. It’s as simple as that. 5/
This is especially infuriating to me because my dad has run a small business for as long as I have been alive so I *know^ that it’s possible to give people stability, good pay, and medical benefits on a small scale. The gig economy was neither necessary nor inevitable. 6/
It was just a clever scheme dreamed up by finance bros who were looking for ways to offload all possible risks. Those who can should resist it in all its forms. 7/
PS: And yes, I have been thinking of how to organize an ethical Classics teaching co-op, but probably lack the capital + connections to pull it off. A girl can dream, though, right? #ClassicsTwitter /End
