THREAD: I’ve seen many suggest the GOP is somehow in the worst position ever. They say this because they are generally Bush fans who want to claim he was a better party leader than Trump. Were they not alive in ‘08? Where in just two cycles, W. Bush relegated the party to
nothing at the federal level, w/Dems having a filibuster proof majority in the senate and a huge one in the house, w/Obama as president and 32 governorships to 24 GOP governorships. But wait! They’ll say that Bush did that after two terms, and Trump only had one.
Not a fair comparison. First, GOP party strength is far better off now than post Bush. Second, Bush only won re-election by coasting on fervor from a disastrous war he started, along with Karl Rove and the Bush admin ginning up GOP support with a systematic campaign that used
gay people as foils and scapegoats to get the base angry. Which is funny now that he’s a liberal darling. He also didn’t have a virus induced recession and widespread fear among the populace from a once in a generation pandemic.
And still, even under these conditions, the EC was closer than 2008 and the GOP almost won back the House. End of thread
