I always think about how queer people aren’t generally born into queer families so learning about ourselves is largely self-directed, and it’s easy to galvanize young queer people into policing their queer elders because there is no built-in apparatus for inheriting our history. https://twitter.com/steve_foxe/status/1391502799586959361
I imagine it’s easy to cordon a young queer person into weirdly puritanical thinking. They know the world is hostile to them, but someone tells them they’re just fine as they are so long as they’re not like those other Weird Dirty Queers, and they’ll fall for it.
It’s a similar tact that gets a lot of new Asian immigrants to absorb model minority and anti-Black rhetorics. “You’re different, but you can be safe with us as long as you’re not like *them*.” And it works. And undoing it takes more work.
