When people say our Govt isn’t doing enough for Agriculture, they ain’t tell 1 lie.
Prior to Hurricane Ivan & Emily, Grenada was 1 of the top exporters of Nutmeg. We were second only Indonesia. The two hurricanes destroyed apx 70% of our Nutmeg trees.
There was no push by GNA or MoA to replant Nutmeg trees. Instead our PM at the time encouraged citizens to take out mortgages and rebuild in preparation for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. The World Cup was a burst in the C’bean and many were left with mortgages they couldn’t repay.
15+ years later and there still hasn’t been any move to improve the Agriculture sector. The export of Nutmeg has dropped significantly and Grenada which was the #2 in the export of that spice isn’t even in the top 10 at this point.
Both nutmeg & cocoa, 2 commodities that were heavily exported prior to the hurricanes were abandoned “indefinitely”.
Thankfully, the Soursop trade picked up and the fish export increased. Creating some foreign income for our island.
However, the two top export foreign exchange earners are now suffering greatly due to the lack of air freight and there has been no visible move by Govt to assist in that field.
Yet, mangroves and Forrest areas are being destroyed to make room for Hotels.
