I love the way that Thai combines words to make new words. Like น้ำ = naam = water. A LOT of words are made with "water."
-Fruit water = juice
-Room water = bathroom
-Foam water = sponge

And, apparently
-Elephant (ช้าง​ -​ chaang)​ water (น้ำ) = hippopotamus!

This is one of the many reasons I love Thai. There's hardly any verb conjugation, no subject-verb agreement, no gendered inanimate objects, and a relatively small vocabulary. Once you learn the alphabet, it's a relatively simple language to learn. Well, reading and writing.

Thai is a tonal language, so speaking it is another thing entirely. You can pronounce a word correctly and change its meaning by using the wrong tone.

Anyway, this was a quick, impromptu #ThaiWithJen. If anybody is REALLY interested, I can break down the spelling of ช้าง​นัำ.
