Until abt 6 months ago, if you asked me what I would do as a young person starting out, I would have said “acquire a small biz”

Now I think the right answer is:

- ID an interesting, underserved niche

- become an expert

- build an audience

- monetize via paid content & events
All you need is to be a decent writer / speaker, intellectual curiosity & willingness to commit to producing content regularly.

You don’t need $ (except maybe to live for a while pre-revenue), you don’t need to know how to code, & you certainly don’t need permission.
Is this kind of business going to make you a fortune?

Probably not (though it might!).

But IMO the odds are extremely high that you can carve out a low-to-mid-six figure income working for yourself with maybe an employee or two.

That beats the hell out of most career paths.
A clarification:

My initial tweet made it seem like you have to become an expert before building an audience.

That’s false.

You can build the audience (in part) by interviewing experts, and become an expert via your interactions with them.
You can follow @moseskagan.
