EVERYONE SHOULD BE WRITING THEIR OWN CADENZAS, THAT WAS THE WHOLE DAMN POINT OF CADENZAS, STOP PLAYING OTHER PEOPLE'S CADENZAS, COMPOSITION IS FOR ALL MUSICIANS, NO EXCEPTIONS https://twitter.com/kevinzhuviolin/status/1390722015544414211
We should be questioning why anyone is playing someone else's cadenza. Next time you see a soloist play a cadenza they didn't write themselves, ask them why, put a look on your face like it's fucking weird they didn't BECAUSE IT *IS* FUCKING WEIRD
The fact that you've only ever learned how to play other people's cadenzas is a prime example of how Classical Music™ has robbed you of your own voice, push back
Hot take: it is far more important that a cadenza is *yours* than if it is well-known, or the most virtuosic everrr, or even "good" (according to antiquated gatekeeper rules of taste of whatever)
I applaud the violinist I QTed above for writing his own terrific cadenzas! It's criminal, though, that our genre and our system of pedagogy never gave him a chance or the confidence until after a conservatory education and winning the Menuhin and Paganini and an Avery Fisher wtf
