a while ago i fell into a huge pit of despair after trying to process the full extent of human cruelty during the pandemic that i did not expect to see. at the time i couldnt reach any conclusion except that my faith in people had been misplaced. but just had a thought
mistaking capacity for cruelty for innate inclinations towards cruelty is easy, but dangerous. we can be totally vile towards each other but to insist that is our most natural state is misleading when the circumstances leading to that cruelty are decidedly unnatural
remember how the theory of hierarchical wolf pack structure has been debunked time and time again but stays in popular culture? it's never been successfully observed or recreated outside of captivity. wolves only do that when theyre put in a situation they cant thrive in
to insist that human beings are naturally this rabid and petty and cruel towards each other as we have seen during the pandemic shit would be just about as substantiated as insisting that calhoun's NIMH experiments shed light on the true nature of mice
but thats the kicker, isnt it! a major argument in capitalist society relies on believing that humans are naturally cruel. "human nature" is supposed to keep us from working together. and of course how CAN people work together if no one trusts anybody
when you run people ragged and bleed them dry, the first thing they will cannibalize is the only thing they have close at hand: each other
but that doesnt make it NATURAL. thats the response of a caged animal getting hit over and over. community IS human nature. community IS the threat to capital. incentivize community and watch capitalists get scared as shit
*rolling eyes looking very over it all* i have reached the conclusion once again that despite my best efforts, love is still the answer
