Today is Mother’s Day! When you think of who gets an abortion, who do you picture?
It may surprise some people to learn that most people who seek abortion already have kids. 59% of people who get an abortion in the U.S. have already given birth at least once. 🧵
Giving birth and raising a child is not only expensive, but potentially dangerous. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations, and it’s rising! This risk is especially high for Black women and pregnant people who face both medical sexism and racism.
This information paints another abortion story for us, one of a mother who cannot afford another child. Even if she could, she knows the risk of dying from complications may leave her children without a caregiver. She knows abortion is the best choice.
This story highlights what we already know: that abortion is an act of love. Love not only for ourselves but for the people around us. It is intrinsically linked to our financial and material well-being.
We are sending love and support to all the mothers who have chosen abortion or may choose it in the future, and to all the caregivers in the world who seek abortion care but do not find themselves represented in abortion statistics, which remain highly gendered.
For this Mother’s Day, consider supporting RFFNH and the National Bail Out for their Free Black Mamas campaign, which raises money to bail Black Mamas and caregivers out of jail and immigrant detention centers so they can be reunited with their families and loved ones.
