I still don’t understand why Leia had to die for Ben to turn back to the light, and her sacrifice ends up being mostly meaningless because Ben dies anyway.

TLJ did such a great job of forming the cracks in Kylo’s armor & revealing Ben beneath it all. He regrets Han’s death, smashing his helmet in the process, and mourns Leia’s pseudo-death, even if it’s brief. Leia didn’t need to literally die one movie later for him to change.
