I’d really love to stop hearing about infill being the solution to our cities core density problem. I’m in support of garden suites and other creative ways to creative density but the cycle of buying and tearing down old homes is seriously damaging our neighborhoods. #yeg #yegcc
The number of empty houses (owned by developers) in my neighborhood is shameful and continues to create problems for the area (lack of care, transient issues with squatting). How do we encourage the restoration and preservation of most (not necessarily all) homes for developers?
Even worse, those if us caring for older homes are constantly stressed that we will be dealing with excavation just a couple feet from our property line, threatening our homes, when neighbouring houses are sold, subdivided and two towers erected in their place.
All I can do is sit and hope lumber prices slow this process because the city sure isn’t going to step in and find ways to protect our city’s heritage as builders with little to no experience ruin our streets. I really hope incoming council addresses this in a more concise way.
Final thought: even neighbors and friends in skinny homes are devastated to hear anytime another old house goes down. It’s ironic, but even they recognize what these houses offer our neighborhoods
