As someone with #aspergers ( #ActuallyAutistic), I think it’s really cool that Elon Musk acknowledged he has Asperger’s on SNL.

I know people have mixed feelings about about Elon, but sharing something like this could help a lot of people.

“Asperger’s” is really just a name given to a small section along the autism spectrum, and has been classified by the DSM-5 as Autism Spectrum Disorder for almost a decade now.

For me, once I started understanding I had ASD it became a lot easier to interact with other people.
People with ASD can miss social cues & tend to fixate on something specifically said, rather than the overall conversational flow.

(Maybe your friend just wanted to tell you about their trip to Mexico... then your synapses fire and you talk about Teotihuacán for 14 minutes).
You’ll dive into some new topic for months, or even years, and soak up tons of information.

...while wearing basically the same clothes every day and following daily patterns (there are a handful of restaurants + coffee shops around town than know my order when I walk in).
ASD is sort of like thinking with a spotlight. You miss a lot, but what you see is brighter.

A lot of engineers have ASD (hyper focus, attention to detail, hyper rational thinking), as do many lawyers, professors, doctors, etc.

ASD helped me a lot in building my company...
Trying to communicate with ASD can be a bit like that scene in Hudsucker Proxy where Tim Robbins is trying to explain his diagram for a hula hoop by showing people a circle and repeating “you know, for kids.”

You understand your idea perfectly well... why don’t they get it?
The hardest part about having ASD for me was when I didn’t realize I had it and was trying to fit in at school or in my early career.

I remember being so frustrated and insecure all the time. Like nobody understood me... but really the issue was I didn’t understand myself.
Once your conscientious of the communication gap, it’s really just about coping mechanisms for anxiety.

There are some great books on Asperger’s for those interested (Look Me in the Eye, Born on a Blue Day, Thinking in Pictures).

My DM’s are open for anyone who’d like to talk.
