i thought this conflict would be all about them vs the world but really it's more of them vs each other. it's not a mere misunderstanding. it's the turning point and clashing of their characters that the series has been building up to

nubsib took the toll on this one because he's always believed that he loves gene and if he loves him back then nothing can come in their way but he finds that his money and wit can't always patch up his problems and just like that his fantasy comes crumbling down.

he knows he loves gene and so he doubts the other party, if gene loves him, and for once we see him mad. he blames him bc he can't find anything else to blame. maybe he was scared because gene's love is the only thing he's holding on to.

gene was firm in his decision to break things off. nubsib misunderstood it as him being soft hearted enough to give in to other people but it's him giving his love for sib. his heart has finally learned to want something and he went against it and thats why this is hurts him more

we've seen three gene outbursts in the series but this was the only one when he wasn't speaking for himself. he wasn't mad. he said and did all of that because he chose to ignore what he feels. he did it out of love.

i'd like to attribute it to the different natures of how they love: value vs care.

nubsib would lose everything even his future to keep gene, but gene would give everything for nubsib's well-being even if it sacrifice his wants

nubsib loves selfishly and he admits it but gene loves selflessly. so when they decided to build their love for each other, this conflict was bound to happen.

gene's mistake lies in his lack of trust and hope. that's what nubsib wanted from him.

sib's mistake is in believing too much in what they had and gene only wanted something realistic from him.

and so u see how they still need each other to balance that?

they just needed to talk. and this is a mistake of them both. they could've talked about it earlier but they failed to do it properly

u can call out gene for lying in the promise scene but honestly they both did. nubsib never brought it up to bc he wanted to keep believing that things would work out fine, that it wasnt even a problem

while gene thought it was too big of a problem to even solve

what hurts the most is that they still love each other. just in different ways. they've laid out all their love but it's still not working out. it's not miscommunication. it's really a contrast of their beliefs

it makes u realize how unalike they actually are. this conflict just stripped them down to their differences.

it even made me ask "why do they love each other again?" "if they weren't childhood best friends, would they still love each other now despite how different they are?"

they've been building this love for each other, a big chunk of it may be rooted in their past but it's been fairly easy bc of their pull towards each other, being in their own little world with this magical and powerful idea of love

but what is love without any sacrifices yk?

this time they are against each other so if they are able to find a middle ground and work on a compromise, learn to overcome their differences they have and still love each other despite of it, that's when u can say that they truly love each other.

that love is a superior kind.

this may have been kinda messy but i hope i put out some points. either it's this or i'm over analyzing everything to compensate for the pain
