Magic recipe 🪄 a thread #langchat #earlylang
Before I start this post I want to make sure this is clear WL educators. Bundles with biographies of communities such Afrolatines or Latine and prepackaged lessons about a country, are neither decolonial or ABAR
- to go further they are not even intercultural oriented lessons. These lessons just provide information and if this information is not analyzed and taught with an ABAR, decolonial or equity lens, they are just performative #langchat #earlylang
This is what I call the kinder egg approach, a concept that I coined. Information with no substance doesn’t help students question their own privilege and question systems of oppression or value diversity in a more authentic way #langchat #earlylang
Trauma based lessons either, these lessons are not only heinous but also highly performative. It’s like a pre-training for white saviorism #langchat #earlylang
The soap opera lesson where the observer place themselves in a vertical higher position towards the struggles of people they are studying is not conducive to social justice. It encourages stereotypes and fosters deficit narratives #langchat #earlylang
That said, every lesson has the potential to be taught for social justice with the right lens. The lens though can’t be commodified or purchase. That lens is developed with learning, questioning that usually makes us feel uncomfortable and guilty #langchat #earlylang
That is why when in my webinars, presentations, Instagram & Twitter space, someone expects a magic recipe, a pre-packaged lesson, an easily installed software for critical consciousness #langchat #earlylang
or asks me - but how do I make my students do _____________? I realize that teacher has either not done inner work, or doesn’t want to, believes in the banking concept of education, thinks there’s a shortcut to Conscientização #langchat #earlylang
As I explained to my students, I provide the tools and the materials but the ones building the bridge of understanding is you #langchat #earlylang
Listen colegas, it doesn’t matter how many bio bundles, cultural lessons you purchase out there, resources cultural or intercultural understanding are not automatically promoters for SJ #langchat #earlylang
What’s more, there are many of these resources that promote stereotypes and further dehumanize disenfranchised communities.

Comidita para el 🧠 #earlylang #langchat
