On this Mother’s Day, we are sad to report that @McClatchy hasn't kept its promise. Last year the company announced it would grant paid parental leave to its employees.

Now, a new mom in our newsroom has had her baby and she is being denied paid leave.
The reason? @McClatchy said it sees our colleague as a bargaining chip in contract negotiations — an attempt to divide and pressure us into accepting the company’s harmful proposals as we negotiate our first contract.
Faced with this injustice, 94 members of @OneHeraldGuild & @BHNewsGuild offered to donate 1,424 hours of our sick leave and other paid time off, a total of almost 6 months, so this new mother could spend time with her baby. But @McClatchy rejected our proposal.
Sadly, as we appreciate all mothers today, we are reminded of our company’s shameful history: https://twitter.com/OneHeraldGuild/status/1319686281031520256
This continues to take its toll. We’ve lost gifted staff members and struggle to recruit new talent. https://twitter.com/OneHeraldGuild/status/1319686286588940290
To punish @OneHeraldGuild, we are being denied parental leave while other non-union newspapers in the @McClatchy chain are benefiting from the parental leave we advocated for. https://twitter.com/OneHeraldGuild/status/1319686291823468544
McClatchy CEO @tonywhunter said last year that supporting new parents was a top priority.

Actions speak louder than words. Tell @McClatchy it’s time to drop the platitudes. Show our newsroom they really do value their employees who are mothers. Happy Mother’s Day! #PayOurParents
