A thread on MS Dhoni's Test career.
Debut

Following his good one-day performance against Sri Lanka, MS earned his test cap in December 2005 and made a crucial 30 runs in a rain affected test match.

When the team score read 109/5 and , MSD played an aggressive innings in which he was the last man to be dismissed.
Maiden 50

MS made his maiden half-century(later broken) in the second Test and his quick scoring rate (half century came off 51 balls) helped India set a target of 436 and the Sri Lankans were bowled out for 247.
Maiden 💯

On India tour of Pak 2006,Dhoni scored a 💯 in the Faisalabad Test. Dhoni along with I Pathan tried to steady the ship, with the team still needing 107 runs to avoid a follow-on. Dhoni played in his naturally aggressive style as he brought up his💯 in just 93 balls.
Improves as Keeper

On the West Indies tour in 2006, Dhoni scored a quick fire 69 in the first Test at Antigua. The rest of the series was unremarkable for Dhoni as he scored 99 runs in the rest 6 innings but his wicket-keeping improved as he effected 13 catches and 4 stumpings.
Early Disappointments

India tour of SA 2006, Dhoni's scores of 34 and 47 were not sufficient to save the second Test against the SA, as India lost the series 2–1, failing to build on their first ever Test win in South Africa. Bruised hands ruled him out of the 3rd Test.
First Test as captain:

Dhoni captained for the first time in Tests against South Africa at Kanpur on April 11, 2008. He was a stand-in captain as Anil Kumble had opted out due to injury. India won by eight wickets and drew the three-match series 1-1
Dhoni remains the only wicket-keeper to lead India in Tests. He won all his first four Tests as captain. His first defeat came in his 12th test as captain — against South Africa at Nagpur in February 2010.
Rare achievement

2009: Ms Dhoni becomes only the second Indian captain in 41 years to win a series in New Zealand
Twin 💯 as skipper

MSD made two 💯s in Sri Lanka's tour of India 2009, and he led India to a 2–0 victory. With this, India soared up to the number one position in Test cricket for the first time in history. India scored 726–9d in the 3rd match which was our highest Test total.
Going downhill

India go down 4-0 in England.

India lose Test series in Australia 4-0.

Go down 1-2 in home Test series against England.

• Under Dhoni's captaincy, India topped the Test cricket rankings for the first time, in 2009.

• Dhoni is the second most successful Indian Test captain with 27 Test wins, eclipsing Sourav Ganguly's record of 21.
•Dhoni is the first Indian WK to complete 4,000 Test runs.

•With 224 against AUS, Dhoni registered the highest Test score by an Indian wicket-keeper when he was on 193, beating Budhi Kunderan's 192. It was also the highest score by a WK-Captain beating A Stewart's 164.
• After hitting a six in the third Test against England in Southampton, Dhoni completed 50 sixes as a captain, an Indian record
Dhoni is the only Indian wicketkeeper to have captained in Tests. He is one of 29 wicketkeeper-captains in Tests. However, none of the others performed the triple role of batsman, wicketkeeper, and captain for even 20 Tests where whereas Dhoni has done the same in 60 Tests.
The records he missed

124 short of becoming the only the 3rd wicketkeeper to aggregate 5,000 runs.

10 short of becoming only the second wicketkeeper to play 100 Tests.

15 stumpings to effect set a new Test record.

6 more dismissals to get to mark of 300 dismissals.
MSD played his last series in the 2014 in India's tour of Aus captaining India in the second and third tests; losing the 2nd and drawing the 3rd, trailing the series 2–0 before the Sydney Test. Following the 3rd Test in Melbourne, Dhoni announced his retirement from the format.
It was a glorious career that brought a different trend: a wicketkeeper-batsman being a fulltime captain over such a long period.

Under Dhoni, India had become the No. 1 ranked team in Tests. However, he leaves them at No. 7.
