Dhoni captained for the first time in Tests against South Africa at Kanpur on April 11, 2008. He was a stand-in captain as Anil Kumble had opted out due to injury. India won by eight wickets and drew the three-match series 1-1

MSD played his last series in the 2014 in India's tour of Aus captaining India in the second and third tests; losing the 2nd and drawing the 3rd, trailing the series 2â0 before the Sydney Test. Following the 3rd Test in Melbourne, Dhoni announced his retirement from the format.
It was a glorious career that brought a different trend: a wicketkeeper-batsman being a fulltime captain over such a long period.
