[Thread: Film Songs based on ragas] These are tough times for all of us. Those in India and those staying away are both affected. Music can bring some sort of solace, even if temporarily. Today we will be playing some film songs based on Carnatic ragas. Multiple languages.

We will start with this Tamil song based on Kalyani ragam. Let us hope whatever Kannadasan says comes true. 'nambinar keduvadhillai'.

This is from the movie 'Ramu'. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Music of M S Vishwanathan. Seegazhi Govindarajan and T M Soundarajan the singers.

Only Kannadasan can conjure a phrase like, 'anjaadha sollirukkum sannidhanam'. Very difficult to translate.

The next song is a Telugu song from the movie 'Vinayaka Chavithi'. 'dinakara subhakara' based on Panthuvarali / Poorya Dhanashri in Hindustani.

Lyrics by Samudrala. Music of Gantasala. Sung by Gantasala. Gantasala was in great form that time. Observe the taan like patterns that he draws at 'brahma vishnu parameswara roopa'

We will now play a Malayalam song. 'tamara kumbilallo mama hridayam' from the movie, 'Anveshichu Kandethiyilla'

The song is based on Abheri. Music by Baburaj. Sung by S.Janaki. Lyrics by P. Bhaskaran. It is a wonderful Abheri / Bhimplas.

Next up is a wonderful Kannada song based on Mohanam / Mohanakayani. From the movie, 'Gowri', 'yaava janmada maitri'

The poem of Rashtrakavi Kuvempu was tuned by G K Venkatesh and delivered to perfection by Janaki.

Next is a Tamil song. From the movie, "Devar Magan", 'masaru ponne varuga'. In the raga Mayamalavagowla

Lyrics by Vaali. It is a chorus song. Music by Illayaraja, who is beyond doubt the greatest master when it came to using Mayamalavagowla in films.

Next we have 'deva mahadeva' from the Telugu movie, 'Bhoo Kailas'. This is based on Sankarabaranam ragam

Music is by R Sudarsanam. Not sure about the lyricist. Probably Samudrala. Singer is M L Vasantakumari

This Malayalam song 'apara sundara neelakasham' is from the movie 'Vithukal' This song is a typical film song. There are elements of both Suddha Saveri and Arabhi in this song.

The next song will be a Kannada song, 'nadamaya ee loka' from the movie, 'Jeevana Chaitra'.

Music credited to Upendra Kumar (We have heard some knowledgeable folks say that it is based on a archival tune of M.RangaRao). Sung by Rajkumar. Based on Todi initially and later on ragamalika. Rajkumar won National Award for Best singer for this song.

'paartha vizhi partha padi' from the movie 'Guna'. In the very rare raga Pavani. Sounds a bit like Varali in some places.

The lyrics are by Vaali but the initial and final parts are from Abhirami Andhadi. Sung by K J Yesudas and chorus. Music by Illayaraja.

Now for a Hindi song, 'kisi ki yaad mein' from the movie 'Jahan Ara'. This is based on Hamir Kalyani ragam

Lyrics of Rajendar Kishan. Music by Madan Mohan. Sung by Mohammad Rafi.

The Malayalam song, 'aayiram padasarangal' from the movie, 'Nadhi'. Based on Darbari Kanada

Lyrics of Vyalar. Music of Devarajan Master. Sung by K J Yesudas.

From the Telugu movie, 'Venkateswara Mahatmiyam'. 'sesha saila vasa'. Based on ragam Rithigowla.

Music by Pendayala. Lyrics Athreya (?). Sung by Gantasala. If you have never seen Gantasala, he is the one singing in this video.

Next up is a Tamil song. 'paatum naane bhavamum naane' from the movie, 'Tiruvilayadal'. The most definitive Gowri Manohari ragam ever to appear in movies.

Lyrics of Kannadasan. Music of K V Mahadevan. Sung by T M Soundarajan. As usual Kannadasan is amazing. 'ala vayanodu pada vandhavanin paadum vaya mooda vandha'. His imagination was of a different level.

We will now hear a Hindi song, 'jaag-dard-e-ishq-jaag' from the movie, 'Anarkali'. Based on the ragam Bageshree.

A ragamalika from a Malayalam movie. 'swapnanal swapnangale' from the movie, 'Kavya Mela'. Song is in Sahana, Shanmukapriya and Kalyani.

Lyrics of Vyalar. Music of Dakshinamurthy Swami. Singers are K J Yesudas and P.Leela.

'joharu sikipincha mouli' from the movie, 'Sri Krishna Vijayam' Based on ragam Atana

Lyrics of C Narayana Reddy. Music of Saluri Rajeshwar Rao. Singer is P.Susheela. The dancer would go on to rule Hindi movies, Hemamalini.

The raga changes from Atana after the first two stanzas. It changes to Hamir Kalyani.

'edho varmukilin'. A Malayalam song from the movie, 'Pookaallam Varavayi' Based on Sri Ragam

Music by Ousepachan. Sung by G Venugopal.
