study tips & how to get good grades with an ed — a thread

1. don’t procrastinate
start ur assignments early, this way u wont be stressed when it’s nearing due. when i’m stressed i’d stress eat so avoiding stress is rlly important
2. focus in class
put ur phone down when in class, listen to the teacher carefully tell urself “i need to understand this”, also try not to miss classes as possible
3. study sessions
pomodoro technique. i use forest to help me focus.
i listen to lofi when studying. sometimes i’d need to concentrate more so i don’t listen to music.
if i cant concentrate / get bored at home i’d go to library.

4. don’t summarize / read ur notes, instead active recall & constantly test urself on new problems
explanation: i learned this in my machine learning class but basically if u memorize ur train data too much, ur model will overfit and it won’t be able to generalize to new problems
cont. i think this applies to us as well because if we only memorize the material, when there are new questions, we won’t be able to solve it
so what i do is understand the materials, then test myself on new problems as much as possible
♡ a tip on how to learn something new is: to make a mindmap / branch tree on the topic.
whenever there’s a new topic, add it to a branch of the tree so u get a general idea on how it relates to each other
♡ if u need to write essays !!
start early so u’ll have time to revise ur writing, never cram it’ll make u sm more miserable in the end
i’m not a native english speaker so i usually use apps like grammarly to correct my grammar when i’m writing
5. eat nutritious food
eating enough nutrients help u to focus on class. my shopping list is: miso soup (probiotic), eggs (protein), blueberries (fruits), lettuce (veggies) almond milk & yogurt (carbs). and sometimes i buy 1 of my fave snacks !!
also dont forget to stay hydrated
6. take vitamins
when u’re in a calorie deficit, u might be lacking nutrients // vitamins. taking supplements ado help with binging urges. i’ll make a vitamin recommendations thread and add it at the end of this thread if u want !!
7. get enough sleep
try to sleep 7-9 hours. my sleep schedule is messy (i sleep at 4 am, 10 pm, 1 am) but i try to get 7-9 hrs of sleep bc i literally can’t function properly if i’m sleep deprive
cont. i would also reach out for instant energy which is food and i’d feel guilty later on so to avoid it i have to get enough sleep. most of my classes r in the afternoon so i dont have to wake up early, but if u have morning classes try to sleep early
8. stay organized
i use habitica to track habits
— i really enjoy playing games but i dont hv time to play anymore so habitica is basically a gamified habit tracker (rpg game). u get exp whenever u finish ur tasks / do ur habits
i would recommend using it if u love playing rpg / games in general. u can make parties n fight bosses
i use forest app to help me focus. u can also plant with friends !! this is my code btw (3Z7MFVTSG)
i use notion to track my goals / assignments due
9. don’t overexercise
i literally fell behind at class bc i spent too much time of my day exercising instead of studying. now i only exercise for 30 mins n remember that 30 mins is still better than nothing
10. limit ur time on social media
this is so hard but whenever i fall back down to my okd habits i’d open the forest app n start planting trees, so i can start doing my work instead
also keep ur phone away when ur working on something !
11. decorate ur room / study space & declutter
not necessary but will motivate u more if u’re studying in a cozy & clean environment
12. productive study breaks
whenever i’m stuck at programming, i would take a shower, do my dishes, do laundry, take a walk, etc to refresh my mind and get some inspiration
13. ur mind (rlly important !!)
i wondered why its so easy for me to memorize how many cals r in certain food, and that is bc i keep thinking abt food
so i thought: if want to get on top of my studies, my mind n thoughts have to revolve around my study topics
so i constantly revise the materials my head and it helps me with remembering them
14. social life
i don’t rlly have social life bc its so hard to make friends in uni but i have a few friends where i can discuss materials with, i think it’s important to have lots connections too (which i need to work on), and i stayed in touch w friends from high school
also joining clubs r important but !! always prioritize ur studies
15. look for help if u don’t understand sth
ask ur friends, teacher, lecturers if u don’t understand a topic. google it, watch videos on utube, look everywhere
16. important tip: if u’re able to explain the concept to other ppl, it means u understand it well. if u don’t, look back at ur textbook n read which part that u didn’t understand (this is example of active recall)
17. have a fixed long-term goal
if u study only to pass ur exams ur goal isn’t strong enough. for me personally, i want to be a successful programmer / data scientist in the future, i also want 2 make an app or something that helps people in their daily lives .
