35 years on from one of humanity& #39;s worst nuclear disasters, the region around Chernobyl has unintentionally become Europe& #39;s largest protected nature reserve.

But how are these animals thriving in such a dangerous space?

Ukrainian authorities say the area may not be fit for humans for another 24,000 years.

But, among the Chernobyl exclusion zone, endangered animals are thriving, including the stunning Przewalski’s horses.
And it& #39;s more than just horses too, as Eurasian lynx, brown bears, European bison, and many other species are being recorded in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

These animals& #39; health is as-yet-unknown, with close monitoring impossible to carry out.

“Wolf numbers are seven times higher, likely due to much lower hunting pressure in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone."

With the entire zone still largely closed off to humans, the region has unexpectedly become a safe space for wildlife to thrive.

It will take time for us to fully understand the ecological landscape in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, but the region could redefine how we think about rewilding and biodiversity.
