I’ve read so many complaints lately about teenagers, about how they’re all out in gangs, leaving rubbish lying around, making a noise, but do you know what? I have more trouble with older people.
Like the old man who stepped out in front of my car earlier, looking at his phone, completely unaware that I was sat there waiting. Or the man who I let out who didn’t even acknowledge me, or the woman in the queue in front of me who was rude to the young cashier in the shop.
During lockdown the teenagers were the ones targeted by the police despite sticking to the rules, while locally, around here at least, it was the middle aged lot who were breaking the rules.
Imagine being a teenager and being stuck inside with your family for a year, not being able to go out, having to do lessons online, often in difficult circumstances at home. They’ve had their exams cancelled, and yes, everyone hates exams but they also mark the end of school.
As it is school has just ended for them with nothing to mark that, and no way of them proving themselves through exams. Exams are horrid but they’re almost a free pass for enjoying your summer after, it’s something everyone goes through.
Mental health issues in teens are on the rise; suicide, self harm. They have social media, which is great because it keeps them connected and entertained, but it also puts a unattainable filter on the world around them.
Anyway, basically, the message of today is, look up from your phone when you’re crossing the road and be nice.
