I don’t often write threads but here goes. There have been a few comments recently about anonymous accounts behaving worse than named ones. Firstly I think that’s rubbish - I could list many named accounts who, in my opinion, need to take a good look at themselves. I’m not 1/
going to name them because that’s not who I am.
There are often good reasons to be anonymous (which was acknowledged yesterday), but some folk think we set up in order to behave badly.
Here’s why I’m anonymous, and I recognise the irony that 2/
in doing this there’s a tiny chance someone involved might clock who I am.
Several years ago I was the subject of anonymous hate mail including death threats. It always came in handwritten envelopes. I was attacked for my leadership, my teaching, my clothes, my family. 3/
I was warned to stay out of the playground. I was told to die.
This went on for 2 1/2 years. The sender has never been caught.
I still park my car far enough from the school fence that I hope it can’t be got at. I still get nervous if I think a car is following me. 4/
I still can’t open handwritten envelopes myself at school.
When this went public the school community was amazing. My office looked like a florist’s showroom. The staff were magnificent. An LA advisor (you know who you are!), helped me get back on track. 5/
But the scars remain. I guard my privacy. I protect my family. I treat people well - I know too well how it feels to be on the wrong end of abuse. I’m anonymous because it makes me feel safe, that’s all.
