Why did George Clooney not do more romcoms? He really was prime romcom leading man material, he could've had his very own 'Cloonaissance' like Matthew McConaughey 'McConaissance'. Way to start the blog on a tangent eh?
This film has an unfair rep in my opinion, is it the greatest romcom of all time? No. Is it a bad romcom? No.
Kate Hudson in her romcom day did far worse - lets take a moment for Something Borrowed and Bride Wars ugh Kate, Kate, Kate what were you thinking?! - I'd say it's somewhere middle of the road where a lot of romcoms end up and the romcom really hit it's stride in the 00's maybe…
However I do think it set a bar for romcoms set in New York which aren't they all now I think about it and they say Paris is the city of love.
The way One Fine Day uses Manhattan as a central character to the plot is really ingenious, the missing the ferry, the having to run around in cabs and puddles and to museums.
One of the most romcommy thing about One Fine Day is that it is literally based off the song of the same title. I mean can't get more romcom than that can you? Basing the actual title of one of the most iconic songs ever and actually is a romcom in a song. Still with me?
Well done.
Michelle Pfiffer acted as executive producer for this movie, which is possibly why it's very realistic in terms fo the way it portrays the struggle of being a working mother and trying to balance career and family.
Originally they wanted Kevin Costner or Tom Cruise to play the part of Jack Taylor who didn't exist in the original script. Both Costner and Cruise passed on the role and it ended up going to Clooney, which I think we can all agree was a good choice.
Needless to say it didn't go down all that well with the critics and was actually considered a commercial disappointment by Twentieth Century Fox, which seems harsh to me.
It's not bad as far as romcom goes there's far worse and the angle it's coming from representing two single working parents, both a Mum and a Dad is something you wouldn't even get now. The Mum would be shown now a days but not so much the Dad.
As far as chemistry goes Pfiffer and Clooney have enough of it to make their pairing seem likely, and Clooney is such a natural fit for the male romantic lead it's effortless to watch to him.
I don't understand why this film is considered so bad - apart from the one time Clooney has admitted to being drunk on set which I think would've added to Jack Taylors charm - the performances are good the leading characters have chemistry, there's a plausible enough reason…
…for them to be thrown together and it's a nice little New York adventure.
Even in their Actors on Actors () chat earlier this year over Zoom you can see they work well naturally together on screen which is probably the main ingredient you want between leading actors in a romcom.
