#MothersDay
One of the striking advice given by Amma when I finished my MBBS was “Serve people as much as possible“
I was not sure how I can do that with just my degree .. I was planning for my postgraduation then which was a tough proposition those days ( even now !)
When I finished my pg & sought her blessings ,the advice was the same with some additional words “Serve people as much as possible with all your abilities “she knew I had acquired new skills
Later, I decided to be in academics rather than private practice & chose Manipal to stay
It meant I couldn’t be with them in Bangalore & I knew they were disappointed but they took that in their stride. She wished me luck & the advice was “Serve people but also train the future generation well”
As I moved up the ladder to become a Professor / unit chief/HOD , each time her advice used to be same with some tweaks.. When I got the admin posts , she said use your power now to help as many people as possible . The word power is not to be taken in a negative sense here
It is more of an empowerment a doctor can bring to the society . It could be education, treatment, advice or even a chat with a patient who is low. She used to say that my responsibility has increased to giving more n more back which I did with the best of my abilities
When they came to Manipal in December, she said “Serve the people & institution well” since now am an Associate dean. Her simple words with huge meanings each time behind those sentences keep me on my toes all the time. No one can replace a mother’s wisdom wrapped in love n care 🙏🏼
A mother is celebrated every moment , in every step and every breath we take. After all, she was the one who gave that to us !
