There’s something weird happening in the Lake District. It will soon pose a large problem.
If you’ve visited after Brexit and during the pandemic...
You’ll have noticed that in many of the shops, hotels, cafes and pubs. There are notices asking for employees.

One of the reasons is that the Europeans that worked in these jobs have gone home. Who can blame them?
But that doesn’t mean ‘more’ jobs for locals. Because there aren’t enough locals to support the infrastructure.

The simple fact is that it’s difficult to live within the park on minimum wage.
If you’re on £8.90 an hour. This isn’t sustainable.
- Bus transport roughly 4.50 for a single or £11.50 for a day return.
- Resident parking is non-existent and expensive.

- Large supermarkets (that aren’t Booths) are outside of the national park.
- Council tax is in the higher bands...I pay £157 a month.
- Small places for rent are largely unfurnished and are £500+ a month. (Homes with more than one bedroom are extremely hard to find.)

The Lake District is pretty place and many residents have accepted tourism. It has to be a thing...
But the local council MUST provide for residents.
If you can’t serve the people that visit. You’ve got a problem.

TDLR:
There are so few people actually living here and want to work minimum wage. That places are really struggling to find an adequate number of employees.
Which means that places might collapse.

I’d be very interested to hear if similar ‘black holes’ are emerging in other national parks...
Just to clarify, the demographic of people from the EU. Were largely single adults, in their early 30s, childless and lived in shared accommodation.
If you fit this description, it might be easier to live here.
But anything outside of it, will be extremely tough.

I first moved here as a single adult. I lived in a basement room and my bills were inclusive. Luckily I didn’t have a car...
Resident parking in Ambleside is non-existent. People have to drive out of the village to park. If you’re caught you’re fined.

I will mention that the quality of rented shared housing is appalling.
There were huge issues with mould and pests.
I looked at similar places and all of them were extremely run-down.
Of course you’ve got to share facilities with 5+ people...

- Increase wages. Businesses are going to crumble either way. You can’t function without staff.
- Decrease council tax for minimum wage workers.
- Improve local transport.
- Have a ‘resident parking’ scheme so locals aren’t fined whilst at work.
