A nixCraft tweet with IMHO quite misleading statics on #Linux #kernel development is making the rounds: https://twitter.com/nixcraft/status/1390981308017414146

FWIW, if you want proper data, better look at what http://lwn.net  or the LF ( https://www.linuxfoundation.org/resources/publications/publications/linux-kernel-report-2020/) occasionally publish. Here is why:

1/5
- the author attribution in nixCraft tweet (and the website they used to generate the data: https://linux-commits-search.typesense.org/  ) seems to be generated from "Signed-of-by" tags, not from the "From" tag, which would be more appropriate. That's why…

2/5
…Linus Torvalds and the LF are in the top of the lists "Author" and "Domains/Org contributing". In the stats from the LF itself (see link and screenshot from the initial tweet of this thread) the LF only makes it to the 20st place, as they are counting properly.

3/5
- David S. Miller/davemloft.net are high on the list. Afaik he's working for a well known Linux distributor, but just uses his private email address for this contributions. His numbers should be added to that distributor, which #LWNnet and the LF do in their reports. It's…

4/5
…similar with Arnd, who uses his private address, but works for Linaro. #LWNnet and #LF account for that, as they have a database which tracks vendor association. But it's private, as some developers want to keep that information private.
