things normalized in latin america that are awful and we live everyday; a thread by an angry chilean tired of seeing people talk from their privilege
cw/ this thread mentions death, violence, murdering, drug traffic, femicide, domestic violence, rape, children abuse, torture, kidnapping and rape
almost all politicians in our countries are corrupted, democracy here isn’t democracy bc they’re all the same. they only contribute to increase classism. people who suffer the consequences of corruption are average families, the only ones who are safe from this are the richest
some of these consequences are expressed in daily things such as highways inundated with rainy days, homes and schools without electricity or water and other problems that our governments “can’t repair” bc there’s “”no money””
millions of people in latin america lives in poverty and without basic services/ health conditions
since there’s a lot of poverty and few job opportunities a lot of people choose crime as a way to live, so robberies, aggressions and kidnappings are a daily thing. if you live here probably at least 70% of people you know has been victim of something like this at least one time
and robbery is just the top of the iceberg. then it’s organized crime narcotraffic, homicide, prostitution, etc. people here are insecure and the governments aren’t interested in protect us. also at least twice a month you’ll ask urself “are those fireworks or there’s a shooting?”
narco traffic and organized crime are part of the biggest issues in some countries over here bc even if you aren’t involved on it, you are in risk of someone kidnapping you or shooting you. you are NEVER safe here
so you’re probably thinking “where’s the police then?” well they are probably corrupted too or just don’t care. most of them are probably there bc it was their last option. also in countries like venezuela you can bribe a policeman with 5 dollars bc they need the money
oh and if you try to fight for your rights, police does not care, they’ll be violent and start shooting people. even if you’re being pacific they’ll catch the first person they’ll see.
no, we don’t trust our police.
and why not mention that jails here are absolutely shit and only poor people go to them bc if u have money or contacts the court will send you to a special and exclusive jail. if you’re a politician who stole thousands of dollars from people they’ll just give you “ethic classes”
and again poverty lead us to people dying due to hunger. there are countries where water is limited. millions of people in latam just survive day by day
if you don’t have money you won’t have access to health. hospitals are full of people even before the pandemic started and they die waiting for surgeries they’ll never have bc the system is absolutely collapsed. basically you will keep living only if you have money
salaries: chile has the highest of latam with $441 usd and u probably think, oh! maybe things are less money there, but no. here’s a chart comparing basic expenses in chile vs countries where the minimum salary is way higher but guess what! things are way more expensive here
being a woman in latam is hell. femicide, daily harassment, domestic violence, etc. again the government doesn’t care nor protect us. they protect men and don’t believe in women until they’re dead, even in that case media and authorities blame women and try to ridicule them
u have no idea how bad is the fear of being harassed, raped or murdered all the time, we aren’t even free to wear what we want bc if something happens to us the court will say “her clothes were provocative” “it was her fault she trusted the uber driver” “she got drunk, her fault”
okay so maybe after all those bad things, you still can study and work hard to get a good job in the future right? well no bc in some countries of latam education is a privilege and segregationist. most of public schools are shit, so unless you go to a private school or pay for+
extra classes that prepare u for the NATIONAL test to enter any university, you probably won’t get there(u have to pay for uni too). but don’t worry! maybe you’ll get an underdegree but you won’t find a job anyway bc if u don’t have contacts it will be 5 times harder to get one.
let’s add 2 things, did u know that in some countries here books have higher taxes? yes EDUCATION HERE ISNT A RIGHT, IT’S A PRIVILEGE.
oh and are u a native english speaker? good for you bc you have no idea how sad is feeling that you need to learn english to be someone in life.
most of latam countries also were or are now under a dictatorship and don’t you dare to express urself against it bc there are 2 options:
1. get tortured
2. get killed
if u have the chance you can scape but imagine how hard it’s to start all over again in other place with nothing
children in latam aren’t safe. children protection services don’t protect them. in here children under national protection have been sexually, physically and verbally abused. they don’t give them education or resources but instead, they involved them in children trafficking.
even tho some latam countries do respect their indigenous people, most of them don’t and just disrespect, ignore, hide and step on them and their roots, let’s not forget that our national territory was theirs first and they deserve to be recognized with their own space
it’s really sad that obviously our governments will never care about how people live in the countries that they are “”leading”” so the only way we have left is doing things by ourselves and protesting. people risk their life out there hoping for a better country in the future.
latin america includes more than 20 countries so please stop calling mexican every latine. also we are discriminated an oppressed by privileged people all the time. and a reminder: stop making fun of latines for their accents, bc at least they’re trying to speak YOUR language
last year, our situation got worse bc of the pandemic. a lot of people lost their jobs and children stopped receiving education due to the lack of technological equipment, the femicides rates started to go up and up because a lot of women were/are in lockdown with their abusers
this is just a general view of everything happening in latam, probably if you go country by country you’ll find things even more sad and awful situations that people live everyday
this is a message for you to realize the privilege of being able to live in first world countries so please the next time you wanna talk for and over people who live here in latin america shut the fuck up
i’ll add some carrds and threads with information about the things going on in latin america and ways that you can help from other countries. if you have one reply with it or dm me
