SIJENGI USHAGOO, a thread.
So, the other day a friend of mine told me he was building a house in the village, or shagzz to you.
I asked him why. He, perhaps in jest or seriously, said he did not want us to be ashamed of him when we go to bury him in the village.
He was aghast that I have no such plans.
Yes, I do not plan to build a house in the village, not now or ever
I will state my case.
My dad built us a beautiful bungalow before I was born.
Later on, we all drifted away to town, Dad included.
Our beautiful home lies unused.
Neither Dad nor I intend to ever live there.
We only go to the village to visit my grandma, and then troop of to a hotel if we have to stay over in shagzz. My kids love the hotel soft life, bacon and stuff, swimming, bouncing castles, the works.
I have 2 other homes in other counties that we use only occasionally, roughly for a total of two weeks each per year.
They cost an arm and a leg to maintain and secure. An unoccupied house has gremlins that break things, block pipes, short fuses, bring in dust, I could go on.
People tell me I will one day retire and will need to go back to the village.
Guys, my village is a frigid place of tea bushes, potato and cabbage gardens. I worked extra hard in school to leave the place for the bright lights. Why would I want to go back?
Achangeni jokes bana.
And did you say retire?? I an a few years short of official retirement age.
I did not go to school for 40 years to work for 20 years and retire. Professors who had grey balding heads that taught me in medical school in the 80s are still doctoring away in this town.
Actually harder than I do.
Who am I then, to even think of retiring. Doctors don't retire. They become better doctors with age. Would you like your kid seen by a fresh newly qualified Doc with a septum ring and an Apple watch, or by a portly old pediatrician that treated you?
So, when my time comes, plant me alongside my grandpa and my son in the land of my forefathers. I do not have to build a house to make you approve of me for the 3 or so hours you will be there.
Let me use a miniscule fraction of that money to live the pampered hotel life.
If you have not approved of me by now, I probably don't want you in my funeral.
Ushagoo sijengi.
