This ever lasting and futile search for security makes us attach ourselves to labels.
Nationalism is one such label. Suddenly, we have a cause. We are on the same wavelength as a large group of people. This makes us feel secure.
Even better, it creates us against them.

So you have people who are lost in their daily lives, suddenly become experts in matters of the nation.
Now they have a larger purpose, an individual or party to identify with. This gives them security.

Such is our desperate need for security that we need assurance not only about our lives, but also after we are dead.

How do we deal with this insecurity? The need for physical security is hardwired in our brains.
