I’ve been thinking a lot about language and what it says about society as a whole. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about (there’s examples everywhere, but I’m sticking to sports here) phrases like “poverty franchise”, “bum”, and even phrases like “poor performance”...
We live in a country that despises people that don’t have resources or access and it’s prevalent in the language that we use. It’s in my lexicon and has been for a super long time. Living in a city that seemingly is trying to actively kill folks that don’t have money has...
Caused me to reevaluate such terms and phrases and try to remove them from my vocabulary as pejorative uses. To be clear, I’m not subtweeting anyone or pointing a finger at any individual other than myself here. But I do encourage everyone to just be aware of our language...
And examine WHY these words and phrases are used the way they are. I don’t have any convulsion to this thread, it’s literally just something that I have been thinking about nonstop lately.
