Don't worry about getting every 5 promotional star if you're f2p because realistically it won't happen unless you start coughing up your cash.
Level up and boost the characters you like. Your team doesn't have to be entirely statistically good characters.
Play on the servers most of your friends play on so if you all want to play together you won't be left out
