On the social value of Cryptopunks:
If I could live for another century or two, I’d be curious to see how different Punks get valued based on the history of their ownership i.e. who owned X Punk?... and what did they do with it? Thread on this below

2/ Humans tend to imbue different items, places, etc. with subjective value based on the connection a consequential person had to that item or place.
3/ This could be a prominent architect's house e.g. Frank Lloyd Wright’s pad in Illinois. It could be the place a Christian saint got baptized e.g. St. Augustine in Milan. Really, across most (all?) categories of art, culture, commerce, faith, etc. we find special artifacts.
4/ While Punks are only a few years old, they’re already the best example we have of a special artifact in crypto-land. But some are more special than others.
5/ The most obvious example of this is the dev punks: the punks @larvalabs set aside for themselves at launch. The lower ID number and added history connected to @matthall2000 and @pents90's ownership creates a different level of scarcity – accordingly, they trade at a premium.
6/ Next, we have individual Punks who are recognizable based on their social media footprint/brand. This is a new movement tbh, but off the top of my head I can think of a few that stick out:
7/ There is @punk4156 as NFT collector/curator extraordinaire & a big brain thought leader. It takes a lot for @beeple to do fan art of you.

8/ There is @peruggia_v known for their chart-topping (for now) alien purchase a couple months back (feels like years?) and for dropping these master’s level tweet threads:

9/ There is @gmoneyNFT. Also a thinker and innovator in the NFT space who I've learned a lot from (from afar). His role as curator of the @saveartspace campaign to put Punks all over Miami, NY, and London is notable:

10/ There is @ArtOnBlockchain (Snowfro).
The wizard of @artblocks_io, an early Punk collector/corner-er of the Zombie market, and one of the nicest humans on the internet.

11/ There is @straybits1, the O’est G claimer of Punks. The space probably wouldn’t be what it is if he didn’t sell some of the aliens he picked up early on.
12/ There is @beaniemaxi w/ his shitposting/dunking on people and his new @punkscomic project.

13/ There is @ClaireSilver12 spreading love and encouragement to NFT artists far and wide.

14/ The way that @justintrimble , @beautyandpunk and @niftynaut will be commentating on the upcoming @ChristiesInc auction is another example of Punks becoming iconic/recognizable as figures & brands. https://twitter.com/beautyandpunk/status/1390555795763437569
15/ I could go on for even longer here and will probably get dinged for not mentioning someone important, but you get the point!
16/ Open questions:
a) Do these Punks eventually carry more cultural significance and monetary premium because of who their owners are and what they both a) have done and b) will do with the Punk(s) they own?
a) Do these Punks eventually carry more cultural significance and monetary premium because of who their owners are and what they both a) have done and b) will do with the Punk(s) they own?
17/
b) Does more value accrue to Punk owners who "build from the inside out" (e.g. any of the above) or does more value accrue to Punk owners who come from the outside and move in with pre-established fame e.g. @garyvee, @kevinrose, @LoganPaul, @AmandaCerny, @mcuban etc.

18/ I mean, if you travel around Europe you’ll see buildings with signs outside that say King/Queen/Prince/Princess so-and-so stayed here for several days in May 1548, blah blah. I'm thinking we have some version of that with Punks...
19/ ... Plaque reads: " @ddaavvee1234 owned this punk from 2017 until 2056; this was @alexgausman's zombie; this hoodie punk was once owned by @DeezeFi; this still is the @FLAMINGODAO alien" and so on.
20/ Closing up here. I think it’s obvious that buying a punk is now an investment in cultural history. TBD if it works out, but that's the thesis. What’s not as apparent imo is that buying a punk is also a forward looking act...
21/ ...you’re not just buying a punk, you’re also buying the right to inject additional social capital into your punk. And there may be even more upside in that than many of us currently realize.
