For clarity, I didn’t mean actually record a podcast right now. I don’t know if this is self-indulgent or an interesting peek behind the curtain, but I like DVD extras (a sad loss in the streaming era), so here’s a little thread of what I mean by “podcast things” for BMP... https://twitter.com/davidmooney/status/1391180062452551690
Towards the end of the weekend - certainly after City’s game - I start thinking about BMP’s pre-recorded features. Some weeks, I’ve ideas in mind tied to the date (like last week’s 20 years since relegation item), but most weeks there are one or two empty slots.
This week, there is currently one slot (maybe two depending on schedules), so I’m mulling ideas around. With no planned item, my next go-to is “did something happen in the game that’s interesting to focus on?” There was another missed penalty, so that might be it.
How to treat that item is the next step. I could write a feature (find clips, write a script, record it, add music) or, as I’m leaning towards for this, I could find someone to talk about it. Someone who can explain what it’s like to actually take a PL penalty maybe.
This gave me that idea. It must be hard, even as easy as it looks. So let’s speak to someone who’s done it. https://twitter.com/DavidMooney/status/1391081485030019076
But I also need a contingency... What if none of the ex-City players I could speak to have done it or what if they’re not available for an interview? I’ll need an item to go in that slot. Maybe that’s writing it up as a feature and editing that over a few hours on Tuesday...
Or maybe it’s a new idea entirely. This week is *slightly* easier because there’s no midweek game to affect sequence records or some-such. It’s also nice some weeks NOT to do a feature because they can take half a day sometimes...
Even if they’re not edited, I like the features mapped out by late Monday/early Tuesday, so I know what work there is left to do. Then the rest is just planning the discussion - and keeping that different from Why Always Us? so the shows are both interesting (hopefully).
In total, it’s probably up to 20 hours work a week that goes into making both BMP and Why Always Us?, starting well before the mic is plugged in. I know I annoy my boyfriend by continually getting and explaining ideas while we’re out and stuff.
I must think about the shows almost constantly. @CiarzScrawlings says “podcast on the brain” whenever I put an idea or question in our WhatsApp group...
