How do we change outcomes for advanced degrees, esp PhDs? How do we reshape our understanding of higher ed and what we're training for?

Here's what I believe...

@academicchatter #phdlife

1/
1. We stop treating the tenure-track as the golden ticket, and we stop judging success in relation to it.

Most PhDs will NOT have a TT Job, and it's time to stop deluding them our ourselves into thinking they will...

2/
2. Get actually excited about non-academic options.

Stop treating them like Plan B, or a backup, or a consolation prize, or a G-D- FAILURE.

PhDs beyond the academy often make more money, have more impact, and LOVE their work. Start celebrating them!

3/
3. Empower PhDs. They come out of academia as broken people, exhausted from climbing through hoops and being told they're never good enough...

This mindset has a negative effect and takes a long time to unlearn.

4/
Look beyond the university, stop believing it's the only place you can have impact, and send grads out into the world to use their abilities to radically transform it.

5/
I don't regret my PhD....

I regret that it took me so long to realize how to build a career with it.

I don't regret leaving academia...

I regret letting myself feel shame about leaving.
