I guess the accurate metaphor for our tax system would be "you get robbed every two weeks as you're walking home from work, and then to really double down on the pain you have to add up all the robberies once a year and if you get it wrong the thief will rob you some more."

Every year before sitting down to do this I tell myself "you've grown as a person since last year. You're mature enough not to be mad online about the utter bullshit of @HRBlock and @turbotax as you do your taxes this year. You can be strong."
