About to watch Joel Ross & Immanuel Wilkins duo, streaming this weekend from the Village Vanguard
First piece is fast, unison 8ths, improvised commentary within a mysterious form. Tight
It's nice to hear them without others. They have a "thing" together of course. The stripped-down scenario brings out something even more unique
they've moved into a "chorale"
The ghosts of "inside out" 60s-era Blue Note LPs with Bobby Hutcherson, with Dolphy and Jackie Mac, are present. Also, of course, the young turks know their Steve Coleman and Mark Turner
There's also a kind of reference to modern gospel music I think. Glasper and that world. The feel is nice. Virtuoso rhythm
Now into an attractive waltz. All segues so far
This waltz is great, it's really grown on me as a composition. G-flat
next begins with mellow alto cadenza and a deliberately breathy sound
moves into kind of a bluesy thing with unison "stings" w vibes notes hanging in the air
oh, now it's transitioned into a thorny vamp -- post-Steve Coleman, but also post-Tim Berne (maybe? prob just the alto sonority)
Ross loves Thelonious Monk, that's for certain đź‘Ť
Nice vibes solo transitions into wild ultra-fast atonal duo. Ligeti-ish
the harmonic content is pure, it all relates to each other. It's "free" but not really
look out, found a dark C# minor vamp. Wilkins plays bass line and Ross arpeggiates Mancini chords...alto overblows for even lower octave? (didn't know the instrument could do that)
instruments trade roles, Ross holds down a C# vamp while Wilkins decorates on high
But this point in the 21st century, almost everyone of significance is poly-stylistic. This set runs a beautiful gamut of ideas with unforced ease
Now an uptempo swing tune, a smooth segue out of the cinematic textures
around half note = 126. That's *the* tempo for this scene
the eighth-note lines are fast enough, but then Wilkins's triplets burst like lightning
oh they found their way back to the opening line! WOW very hip
fairly chaotic now, a nice release...
bringing it in...finding a coda...I see it coming...chimes in F..the abstract line enshrined in a halo...
...and in some blues shouts and we are there.
Great set, cats! Very enjoyable hour of music!
