- Bronze medal for Men’s 4x400m team and Tokyo 2020 Olympic automatic qualification
After months of inactivity without participation in international events, team Botswana was amongst 31 nations that looked to impress as they headed to Silesia, Poland for the 2021 World Athletics Relay Championships.
As some dominant nations like USA, Jamaica and Canada not being able to grace the event to covid restrictions in their respective countries it was time for other nations to rise up to the occasion and in the process qualify for Tokyo 2020.
In a dominant display, the men’s 4x400m relay team ran to victory in their respective heat clocking a time of 3:04:03 to qualify for the finals and in the process qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
In the penultimate activity of day 2 of the championships, we saw Botswana’s 4x400m team led by veteran Isaac Makwala race to a 3 place finish behind Netherlands and Japan.
The quartet of Leungo Scotch, Isaac Makwala , Ditiro Nzamani and Boitumelo Nzamani were guaranteed a bronze medal and podium finish for team Botswana.
Botswana also fielded a very strong 4x400m ladies team that comprised of Amantle Montsho, Galefele Moroko, Thomphang Basele and Loungo Matlhaku.
The ladies clocked an impressive 3:43:99 but it wasn’t eough to send then through to the finals and at the end they missed out on Olympic qualification by 4 seconds.
The men’s 4x100m and 4x400m mixed relay teams put on a brave fight in their respective heats but failed to progress to the finals with them finishing out of the qualification positions and in the process crushing their Olympic hopes.
