In a bid to aid athletes qualify for major international and continental competitions, the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) will on the 15th-16th May 2021 host the National Athletics Championships at the National Stadium in Gaborone.
In a press statement that was released this week by BAA General Manager Pinkie Wilson, it stated that the event is organized “ to give athletes an opportunity to prepare and qualify for major athletics competitions such as Tokyo 2020 Olympics, World Junior Championships and…
…Africa Senior Championships.
Various athletes from across all the BAA affiliated clubs have been invited to be part of the championship and will look to impress on the day and book their spot in upcoming major athletics tournaments.
The press statements further states that close to 195 athletes shall be part of the national championship with most noticeably big names such as Isaac Makwala, Christine Botlogetswe and Galefele Moroko headlining the event.
The athletes will be competing in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m and 4x400m races across both males and females with only 2 field events (Long and High Jump) scheduled for the championship.
The composition of the Botswana Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games entirely comprises of athletes from athletics with the exception of 2 individuals who are from Boxing and BAA will look to add more representation through this event.
With COVID 19 protocols in play, the event will be behind closed doors with athletes and team officials only in attendance.
