Is Jimmy Anderson a Bit of a hometrack bully? Yes
Does that matter? No, Because most people are.
Since 2011 37 bowlers have taken 100 or more test wickets, Stuart broad has the most (418) and Mehidy Hasan has the least (104), James Anderson sits a comfortable 3rd with 402 test wickets. At face value stats Anderson has the 5th highest average and the 4th Lowest economy rate.
However Anderson has faced criticism for being “A Home track bully”. Does he have a lower average at home? Yes. Is he a master of the dukes ball and swinging conditions? Yes. Has he had some bad away performances? Of course. Everybody knows this, but does it actually matter?
So I took those 37 bowlers with 100 wickets and organised them into a graph showing home and away averages and the percentage difference, This Graph shows that Anderson has a 29 percent higher average away than at home which puts him 20th out of 37
based on this metric, there are 7 bowlers with Lower Away than home averages in this time, 2 are subcontinent seamers, 3 are SENAW spinners one is Stokes and the other Mitchell Starc.
The Worst in this period are Mehidy Hasan, an often unsupported spinner from Bangladesh, Woakes, a notorious Struggler away from home, Islam who falls under the Mehidy bracket and Jason Holder a late 70s bowler so that record is not unexpected.
However this Data can almost mislead you when it comes to Anderson, as I mentioned previously Anderson is amazing at home which is a significant reason why his percentage difference is so high, hwoever he has the 7th lowest away average, Lower than Boult, Shami, Broad, Rabada
This data does show that Anderson has a High away average compared to his home average but that is more to do with his mastery of the Seam friendly English conditions than a sheer inability to bowl away from home.
The same can be said for people like Vernon Philander whose away average is similar to Anderson's but is made to look worse than it is by his mastery of his native conditions.
And of course defying this data of Bowlers statistically being very poor away these days is the incomparable Pat Cummins whose dominance at home is only matched by his own dominance away from Australia.
Another One of the most notable and odd Records is Mohammed Shami, a man who averages just 20 on the flat and spinning decks of India but over 30 away from home, a very strange anomaly.
