So excited to learn from @ESMathTeacher! #MathForLiberation
Ethnic Studies Praxis inspired by Nahui Ollin. Four components of ES Praxis:
–Theory
–Reflection
–Practice
–Action

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
Ts tend to spend most of our time in Practice. Action gives us our why. This is cyclical, but not a perfect sequential cycle. We need to constantly be engaging in all four parts.

WA Ethnic Studies Now Framework has five themes. The five themes are interrelated and cannot be separated. This is beyond social justice math. We're not just focusing on power and oppression (one theme). We're helping get to the roots.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
We can't just teach Ss about oppression in our society. - @ESMathTeacher

(Side note: the ppl criticizing this framework in a knee-jerk way have clearly never actually read it!)
#MathForLiberation
Simplest example of how math is a social justice topic: statistics. If we take the humanity out of the statistics and say "it's just the numbers", we dehumanize.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
Social justice math vs. ethnic studies math. SJ math stays focused on Action and Practice. "How can we use math to make positive change?"

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
ES digs deeper: we look at history, identities, the root of the problem. It interconnects with Theory and Reflection.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
SJ doesn't focus on individual's identities.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
We need to make a mindset shift in math. We can't start with math. If we start w/math, we'll be trying to fit all of our Ss' identities into one math topic.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
We know math is everywhere. Finding the math is the easy part. Save the easiest for last.

- @ESMathTeacher #MathForLiberation
ES Framework uses the word "elements" rather than "standards" because we can never "arrive at" or "master" liberation. Liberation is an element we can try to embody.

These are the 5 themes referenced earlier in the thread. Thank you @SiddhiDesai311 for capturing the image! https://twitter.com/SiddhiDesai311/status/1391125732823347203?s=20
Closing reflection time: my biggest takeaway is the idea that we should start with the context first and worry about the math second. It's amazing how easily we can think of a million math questions for any context!

#MathForLiberation
A challenge/question I have moving forward: it seems like this context-first model works best when you design a new course from the ground up.

#MathForLiberation
How do I incorporate this into existing courses w/specific content standards? Or is that question too limiting/stuck in old ways of thinking?
