Walls by Louis Tomlinson is an album about leaving an unhealthy relationship, moving on, and bettering himself; a thread
I just want to preface this by saying that these are all just interpretations of the songs. Don’t take this as a fact. Not every song on the album is about this topic. I never do analyses so don’t expect this to be amazing.
To start off, before the album was released Louis said this himself:
“There’s a little bit more emotional stuff. In general, I’m just wearing my heart on my sleeve, and being honest, reflecting on a breakup. As a lyricist, I always try to be as honest as possible.”

“We’re sleeping on our problems like we’ll solve them in our dreams, wake up early morning and they're still under the sheets” They both knew the relationship was unhealthy and had a lot of problems, but chose to ignore them, hoping that they’d solve themselves (they didn’t).
In Habit, Louis uses drug addiction as a metaphor for the relationship and how he struggles to leave.
“Never thought that giving up would be so hard
God, I'm missing you and your addictive heart”
“You're the habit that I can't break
You're the high that I need right now”

Louis said Defenceless is a cry for help.
“I hope that I'm not asking too much
Just wanna be loved by you”
“And I'm too tired to be tough
Just wanna be loved by you”
“Never been so defenceless
And you just keep on buildin' up your fences” (1)

Louis is basically begging his partner to love him but they keep “building up their fences” (being distant). And eventually Louis is too tired to keep fighting for their love. (2)
“I know you said that you'd give me another chance
But you and I knew the truth of it in advance
That mentally you were already out the door” They tried to make the relationship work, but they both knew his partner wanted to leave.

“Nothing wakes you up like waking up alone
And all that's left of us is a cupboard full of clothes” This line is about breaking up and fully realizing that you’re alone. Which builds onto the next part.

"The day you walked away and took the higher ground
Was the day that I became the man that I am now" To me, this lyric talks about how after the breakup, Louis worked to become a better person (who he is now).

Louis said that Too Young is about meeting someone at 18 and “not being equipped for it”. He said he “had to make a few mistakes and go down the wrong path to realise what I had and what I thought I'd lost.”
“So this one is a thank you for what you did to me
Why is it that 'thank you's' are so often bittersweet” To me these lyrics show Louis thanking the person for helping him on his journey to who he is now and finally moving on.

“Oh, whatever tears you apart
Don't let it break your heart”
“It comes and it goes
We're driving down a one-way road
To something better, something better”
“And what hurts you is gonna pass
And you'll have learnt from it when it comes back
You'll be doing better” (1)

These lyrics, and most of the song, are Louis giving us advice from personal experience; he’s basically tell us to stay strong because it will get better. (I had to shorten some lyrics because of the character limit) (2)
