There is so much historical, social and political weight on the decision to not have children. It's tied up in the oppression of women, the objection to women having sexual agency; in systemic misogyny, religious dictates, and social norms.
Being childfree by choice is in some ways like any other "lifestyle" choice (veganism, non-monogamy, even breastfeeding vs. formula): People feel threatened you're doing something different than what they chose, get defensive & lash out. They see my choice as judgment of them.
To me, the take-away quote from this article is this: "It’s surprising how many women are offended by my decision. They think, 'What must you think of me if I’ve got kids?' I don’t think about you at all. I just don’t want kids."
