Things I noticed about "The Archer" from Taylor Swift's sixth studio album "Lover" : A thread
The archer is the symbol for Taylor's zodiac sign Sagittarius and also represents Cupid
In the cover of the album the colors are just a darker shade of the album cover representing how she feels dark emotions and also her anxiety and doubt
It is the most Folklore-esque song on Lover which is the album that follows it. The song was released on July 24th of 2019 which is exactly 1 year before Folklore's release
The beat in the song never drops because it represents how people with anxiety wait for things to get better and the feeling of relief to wash over them, but sometimes it never does.
This song represents the conflict she has between her and herself and how all her past demons have caught up to her.
"Combat, I'm ready for combat" represents her doubt as she enters a relationship and how she's ready to fight defend, and protect herself from the pain that comes with a relationship.
Movies and fairytales are recurring themes in her songs especially in Fearless, however she always shows her disappointment on how life is not similar to fairytales and how people don't usually get their happy endings.
"Easy they come, easy they go" shows how she is used to people leaving her suddenly. "I jump from the train, I ride off alone" is a reference to "Getaway Car" from her album "Reputation" and how she abandon her ex-lover.
"I never grow up, it's getting so old" is a reference to her song "Never Grow Up" from her third studio album "Speak Now" and it also represents the image people paint of her as "childish," "immature," and "vengeful."
"Help me hold onto you" is a reference to her song "New Year's Day" from "Reputation" and how she needs help and reassurance from her partner to stay in the relationship and stick to him.
In the chorus she compares her falling in love as her being a victim which further more continues on with the point that she "never grows up" because the media always paints her as the woman who victimizes herself.
"Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?" shows her resent towards people who left her, but her understanding why, which is a representation of her self-doubt.
"Dark side, I search for your dark side. But what if I'm alright, right, right, right here?" these lines show her trust issues and how she believes that people don't actually like her, but they use her for status.
"And I cut off my nose just to spite my face. Then I hate my reflection for years and years" here it shows karma to her previous actions and how she had to pay the consequence of her actions.
"I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost" this has two meanings it's either because she wonders if people see right through her, or because she feels invisible which was the theme of the music video of track 5 ("Delicate") on her album "Reputation."
"The room is on fire, invisible smoke" it's a reference to "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" in both songs she feels anxiety towards her relationship in "DWOHT" she's scared that people will find out about her relationship and in "The Archer" she's scared of ruining relationship.
"And all of my heroes die all alone" is a reference to "All My Heroes" written by Jack Antonoff the o-writer of this song and also a reference to Lorde's song "Perfect Places" which was also co-written by Jack Antonoff.
The repetition in the bridge shows her anxiety which is a technique she used for her song "Out Of The Woods" to show anxiety, as well.
"All the king's horses, all the king's men. Couldn't put me together again" is a reference to Humpty Dumpty which is a nursery rhyme to further proof that she's never going to grow up.
"'Cause all of my enemies started out friends" represents her past friendships with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Karlie Kloss, and Katy Perry and how they all were her friends until they betrayed her and caused her pain.
Taylor mentions the concept of "staying" a lot in her songs like "Stay, Stay, Stay," "All You Had To Do Was Stay," "New Year's Day," and many more which shows uncertainty and her trying to prove that she makes it difficult for people to stay with her.
