How I went from an unemployed musician to a multi-7 figure ecommerce brand owner.

A thread on how I turned my $700 stimulus checks into a $500k/month business.
I dropped out of college in 2020 for music, had my first show cancelled due to the rona, and my bank account was dead dry

But in June 2020 that changed a little bit thanks to the stimmy checks
Most kids took their stimulus and spent it on weed, clothes, dumb shit. I saved it and got some unemployment on top

A few weeks later my homie showed me his ecom store where he was hitting almost $1k days and that was insane to me.

I said alright..
I was going to invest my stimulus in marketing education and see what happens. I thought, I’ll give it 3-4 weeks, if it doesn’t work out back to music

I spent a week building my first store, obsessing over it, 100 different exports of the same logo, perfecting it completely
... and it was a complete dud. Took it to the chest, stepped back, watched a couple more courses, and launched my next store

This time it worked
I can say the product now and even show the site
http://Turnmyauxblu.com
It’s pretty terrible actually but at the time it was an absolute banger to me and like i said, it worked
Profitable from day 1, I was on top of the world. That was all the fuel I needed
I spent the next 3 months with my head down, learning.

The biggest thing i learned?

There are still secrets in the ecom space. No matter what any “tell-all” course claims, there are things that some of us learn and never tell.

Same store in July and Aug here
At one point for like a month I was launching a new website every day all by myself, no team just one VA. Eventually I figured out some recipes, right in time for Q4
Here are some Q4 results, and in the next tweet, some lessons learned
- Product is king. A banger product WILL work, even if the rest of your operation looks like a dumpster fire
- Everything else is queen. Longevity truly does come from constant fresh creatives, branding, professional copy, skilled media buying, influencers, multi platform ads..
...email marketing, SEO, custom content, influencers, product cost negotiating, and even chargeback mitigation
- Prepare for Q4 in Q3. Build your stores, systems, apps, optimize conversions, have new creatives in the pipeline, be profitable if you can, breakeven if you need to
- By the way, since product is king, what does that say about product research?

Its literally the most important piece of the puzzle. I have full time VAs dedicated strictly to product research. Be picky, and get creative (hint: starts with a Tik and ends with a Tok)
Anyway, i spent the beginning of this year building a team to make those Q4 numbers a year long reality. Ultimately January I lost a lot of money, February we broke even, and March and April we really found our stride
In April we crossed over $500k across many stores, and we’re aiming for the milli bomb in May. Here are some lessons from my 2021 so far if you’re dropshipping
- I’ve spent tens of thousands spam testing on general stores and it can work to nail huge winners, but ultimately one product and branded stores with high conviction products worked best for us
- Selling things that you personally like (and maybe want) always works better
- FB/IG is great for scaling but its getting ridiculous in all ways. Pinterest, Snap, TikTok, Google Ads, etc learn to eat from those hands before its too late. A wise man digs a well before he’s thirsty
