SOME OF THE MAJOR KINGS OF SOUTHERN INDIA

A 🧵 u must read

1. Pazhassi Raja

Pazhassi Raja is one of the first freedom fighters of our mother land and I think he is one of the most underrated one.

His battle against the British is the stuff of legends.

1/20
So much so that he was called the lion of Kerala ( Kerala Simham)

Pazhassi Raja aimed to preserve the independence and unity of his kingdom while the British were determined to annex and dismember it.

2/20
His own desire for independence and sense of betrayal by English on their earlier promise to respect his country’s independence.

He was perhaps one of the only single kings who went toe to toe against the largest and richest empires of the world at that time.

3/20
The English force depleted at almost 80% during the war against the Lion of Kerala.

Estimates say that the British had around 15000 troops as a conservative number while Pazhassi Raja had around 3000 with no fortifications like castles.

4/20
And he still gave the British a run for its money for more than 10 years.

5/20
2. Raja Raja Chola

This legendary figure is the Chola king who reinstated the Chola king as the definitive super power in Deccan after their battle against the Rashtrakutas.

6/20
One of his major point was to conquer all of the Indian Ocean under his command for better trading and administration. With this in mind he became the Lord of the Indian Ocean and it's high seas. Inland he increased the chola dominion to as far as Tungabhadra river.

7/20
His administration was also some of the best that one has ever seen in those years.

8/20
3. Rajendra Chola

Like father like son.

Clearly with the ambition of his father Raja Raja Chola, Rajendra would carry on the great legacy.

9/20
During his reign, he extended the influence of the Chola empire to the banks of the river Ganga in North India and across the Indian oceanthe West and South East Asia, making the Chola Empire one of the most powerful maritime empires of India.

10/20
His victory against the Srivijaya empire literally made the cholas the king of the entire South East Asia.

Along with that, nearly all of India’s eastern coast was under their control till bengal.

11/20
4. Hari Hara and Bukka Raya.

These two Warrior kings laid the foundation of what is going to be called the Mighty Vijaynagar empire. ( Karnata Samrajya)

During the Sultanate Rule in Deccan, various small communities were being psychologically and physically tortured.

12/20
The local kingdoms of Kampili, Kakatiya and Hoysala along with Warangal were completely annihilated.

Southern India burned till 1336 but no more.

These two warrior prince ( their earlier story is shrouded in mist as to who they were?

13/20
From local vassals of veer bhalala or someone else) along with their guru Swami Vidyaranya formed the foundation of Vijaynagar empire

Under it's glorious rule the sacred texts and traditions with culture survived against the backdrop of the Central Sultanate

14/20
And for more than 200 years the Vijaynagar empire formed a bulwark against the oppression of the Bahamanis.

To form an independent EMPIRE from the ashes of smaller kingdom directly under the sultanat’s rule was deemed impossible.

15/20
But these two went ahead and did it. ( Just like the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj 350 years after them)

16/20
5. Krishnadeva Raya

From the same Empire of Vijaynagar, Krishna dev Raya is considered one of the greatest kings of India.

He was the man who finally broke the back of Bahamani Sultanat, forcing them to break into 5 different smaller kingdoms.

17/20
He was also a great poet, wrestler, warrior, dancer and man of much justice.

Under his command the capital Vijaynagar reached to it's greatest heights with wealth soaring to unimaginable standards.

18/20
The city was second to only Beijing and twice as big as Rome. So say the contemporary records.

He also defeated the mighty Gajapatis of Odisha and his sheer brilliance in the battle of Raichur against the Sultan cannot be over emphasized.
