Thinking back on sorely l shortly after I watched The Force Awakens, back when I was hanging out in a much more reactionary crowd, and someone called Rey a Mary Sue,
and I was like "nah she totally did have internal conflict to overcome with her abandonment issues and being afraid to pursue her destiny and such" and he was like "oh wow being afraid to do lightsaber fights just like everyone else would, what a great internal struggle"
Like that had to just be misogyny, right? The whole idea of Mary Sue in the modern age, at least theoretically, is that they're unrelatable and underdeveloped, and this guy pivoted from THAT to "that development is too much of a "normal person" thing"
For the record I don't think Rey is like a stellar example of a maximally interesting female character or anything I just think the criticism she drew from misogynistic nerds is very disproportionate
