Hello #screenshotsaturday!

I posted this gif showcasing the Hellsaber in @Hellscreen_Game but just wanted to talk about it's development.

Small thread:

#gamedev #indiedev
@Hellscreen_Game needed a melee weapon and after reminiscing about Dark forces II, I figured I could do a vibrant eye catching lightsaber type weapon.
One of the first mods I ever did for a game was to change the lightsaber in Jedi knight to be less noisy. I didn't like the "fizzy" look so instead, I changed it to became more of a posterized style. THAT version is what I wanted in @Hellscreen_Game as a personal nod.
The weapon I designed ended up being reminiscent of Count Dooku's saber - this was accidental and was a result of chasing a more Giger-esqe curved look
I didn't want to spend time animating weapon swings so instead opted for a hyper stylised look, utilising planes and shaders which scroll textures whilst being distorted.
This is what it looks like from different camera angles
Here is a test I did showing the above plane/texture offset in action. I'd go on to change the angle among other things but it was mostly there straight away.
Here is a earlier version of the Hellsaber and how I had it angled differently. Note the dithered outside glow which I would eventually remove for a cleaner blade.
So what's next? Well, I want the player to be able to throw the saber as well as gain upgrades which allow you to reflect enemy projectiles but I will show that as it gets done! IN the mean time, enjoy this old gif of the Hellsaber cutting down a plasma thrower!
