What is it like to work remotely from Seville? https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ‡Ș🇾" title="Flagge von Spanien" aria-label="Emoji: Flagge von Spanien"> So many people have asked me since last year when we moved, so here is a thread.

1. This is the background noise of my work calls: spontaneous flamenco singing in the streets of Triana https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen" aria-label="Emoji: Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen">
2. My computer, my phone and all my internet accounts have no idea of where I am. Some show me content in English and some in Spanish. Some still direct me to their .co.uk sites and some ask me to confirm my location every time I visit them. VPN doesn’t solve everything.
3. Sorting out taxes and my employment status in Spain whilst working as a contractor in the UK was a nightmare. In the end I became self-employed/sole trader, but I also found a number of umbrella companies specialised in working with contractors abroad. So this is a thing.
4. The disconnection between my work life and my personal life, or in other words, what I experience inside/outside of work is huge. It goes without saying that Andalusian and British cultures have different values, traditions and ways of expressing oneself and behaving. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ’ƒđŸœ" title="Tanzende Frau (mittlerer Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Tanzende Frau (mittlerer Hautton)"> https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž" title="Achselzuckende Frau (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Achselzuckende Frau (heller Hautton)">
5. Hardly anyone I know here works in Design or Tech. Nobody seems to care about it either, behind using the products. None of my friends really understand what I do, and they’ve stopped asking.
6. Meeting people in person is awesome. Even in this pandemic, you just go to the same coffee shops, bars etc every day and the usual suspects show up and we have a little nice chat (tertulia). Most plans are improvised and end up in a “terracita” with a few tapas and beers.
7. I’m sure I’m forgetting lots of English, and my Spanish accent is back to sounding strongly Andalusian https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen" aria-label="Emoji: Gesicht mit FreudentrĂ€nen"> Found this guy who does TikToks about how the way we speak is different from the rest of Spain. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMebdCXAr/ ">https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMebdCXAr...
8. Seville is breathtakingly beautiful and it won’t let you forget it or get used to it. It’s easy to run into beautiful images like these even when you just go out quickly to buy bread or do daily errands.
9. It’s sunny 95% the time and that’s good because I don’t feel the anxiety I did in London when I saw a ray of Sun and I had to go out or I’d miss it! It’s also unbearably hot from April/May until November, so folks need to adapt their routines.
