From SE25 to Bramall Lane

‘Like a night out in Sheffield, like a greasy chip butty......

I love a trip to Sheffield, apart from the time my blue 306GTI got stolen.....and it was my birthday! You know what my favourite game & goal is but there are plenty of other great memories.
Show us your stats....

Matches: 45

Grounds: 5 (Selhurst, NHS, old & new Wembley, Bramall Lane).

Goals For: 53, Against: 55

Sheff Utd won 18, drawn 8, lost 19

Biggest wins & losses: 3-0, 0-3

I’ve seen Palace win.....18 times

Most goals in a game: 8
First Game: Feb ‘78

I can remember this one so clearly. I was sat on a little stool, AW side, towards the Whitehorse in line with the penalty spot. Peanut shells were flicked at me all game. I was a ball boy! 3 mins to go, Swindlehurst scored from the spot, 1-0. Loved it.
Favourite Game: May ‘97

The irony of writing this straight after the Leicester one. Wembley is a fickle beast, she breaks your heart one year, the next, you’re the happiest man in the world. Fave game, goal & undoubtedly the greatest ‘Stevie Coppell’s red & blue army’ chant.
A Trip To Bramall Lane

An old school ground, close to the town centre with pubs all around it. What isn’t there to like about a trip to Sheff Utd? Used to be feisty, lost my Palace ski hat back in the day as it all kicked off. I soon learnt, don’t wear colours!
Best Goal: Gordan Petric

March ‘99, Palace are in a mess, admin around the corner & we travel to Bramall Lane. Within 10 mins, Palace score one of the great goals of the season, Petric brought the ball forward from the halfway line & let fly from 35 yards, it rocketed in.
Random Game: FA Cup S/F

April ‘14, I’m asked to host some guests at Wembley for what is the unsexy semi-final, Hull v Sheffield Utd. It turns out to be a classic. 1-0 to Sheff Utd coming up to HT, nothing to see here, 4 goals in 12 mins followed. Madness. It finishes 5-3 to Hull
Magic Memory: Jan 91

As Palace fans, we were living the dream in 90/91. Bramall Lane was no different. Decked out in our sexy blue kit, Eddie McGoldrick burst down the wing, crossed to Mark Bright who volleyed home. Delirium on the terrace. 1-0 win & 3rd in the big league.
Worst Game: Dec ‘02

Week before Xmas & we’re in Sheffield for the Q/F of the League Cup. Jordan decides to go walk about pre kick-off, sits next to me & tells me how bad a manager Steve Coppell is 🤬. We’re dreadful, Peschisolido hasn’t scored all season, he gets 2, we lose 3-1
Last Time: Feb ‘20

Landed in from LA that morn, jet lagged to hell & hoping for a thrilling Palace victory to get me through it, oh well, at least there was a free bar!

Palace dominate the 1st half but don’t score, a rare Vincente error gifts them the win right in front of me.
Played For Both Clubs: Shaun Derry

He’s better than Stevie G, more faithful than John Terry....

I love Dezza, a leader who will always be fondly remembered for survival in 2010. The combative midfielder played for The Blades 98-00 before moving to Pompey then Selhurst.
That’s it for this week

We’ve had a couple of thrilling 3-2’s & some real battles with The Blades. What’s your favourite memory of playing SUFC? For those at Wembley in ‘97, can you describe the atmosphere with 15 to go? Suddenly it got loud & stayed loud. What a day. RT welcome
